What Makes a Good LASIK Candidate?

Are you squinting while watching your favorite TV show? Is your vision blurred on a perfectly clear day? Did you reach for your favorite pair of reading glasses to read this blog post?

If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, you are a good candidate for LASIK.

LASIK is a surgical procedure aimed to reduce dependency on glasses or contacts. If your vision is impaired, it can be a great tool to help improve your eyesight. Vision impairments such as farsightedness, nearsightedness, or astigmatism can be greatly reversed through the procedure.

Even so, poor eyesight is not the only qualification for LASIK eye surgery. An eye doctor must evaluate your eye health and consider your overall health to ensure surgery will be safe and quality results can be achieved.

Still, some factors that make you a good candidate include:

  • you are 18 years or older
  • you have a healthy cornea
  • you have a healthy retina
  • you don’t have an autoimmune disease
  • you receive a prescription for glasses and/or contacts on an annual basis

What’s great about the LASIK procedure is that it is largely inclusive. Most adults will be able to have the procedure. It is pain-free, and although there may be slight irritation or itching following surgery, it clears up within a few hours.

However, it should be noted that if you are pregnant or nursing, you will not be able to have LASIK until you have given birth and are no longer breastfeeding. Chronic illnesses can also disqualify you from the procedure but that will be determined after a health screening and thorough eye exam.

If you have imagined enjoying your day to day activities without trying to remember where you last placed your glasses or dealing with the high maintenance of contacts, then LASIK could be your dream come true.
