How to Keep Your Eyes Sharp as You Age

aging eye problems

Good eyesight is such a fundamental element in our lives.  All too often, we don’t realize how much it is taken for granted until we begin to experience vision loss.  One significant reason for the loss is aging.

Aging can play a big role in deteriorating eyesight, but it does not mean you shouldn’t take steps to protect your eyesight regardless of your age.

Here are some tips that can help your eyes last a lifetime.

#1 – Eat Healthy

fruits and veggies

Having a balanced diet and drinking plenty of water will help your body and eyes function at a higher level, essentially lessening the wear and tear your body and eyes experience over time.

Fruit, like oranges, and vegetables, including carrots and spinach, may lower your risk of ailments that can cause vision loss.

#2 – Sleep

What more needs to be said?  Sleeping regenerates and refreshes your eyes.  Sleeping is one of the more important things you can do to not only positively affect your eye health but overall health.

#3 – Get Regular Eye Exams

Getting yearly eye exams allows early detection of any issues that could affect your vision and prescribed treatment to protect it.

If you have underlying health issues such as diabetes, you may require shorter intervals between your exams.

#4 – Remain Attentive

Pay attention to your body.

Your eyes will generally give warnings such as:

  • • double vision
  • • headaches
  • • pressure in the eyes
  • • trouble focusing.

These signs point to potential vision-threatening issues.

Please don’t wait until it’s too late.

#5 – Protect Your Eyes

Ultraviolet rays from the sun can damage and weaken your eyes.  Wearing UV filtering shades can perform double duty by protecting your eyes while allowing you to show off your sense of style.

Utilizing these tips can help stave off glaucoma, cataracts, and other age and health-related vision issues.  These instructions are, however, only the tip of the iceberg.

Avoiding cigarettes, taking multivitamins, reducing stress, and following an exercise program are ways that overall wellness can lead to a long life of good vision.
